Shinkansen Diaries/Bullet Train: May 11th/12th

No man, or body of men, can dam the stream of language. -James Russell Lowell, poet, editor, and diplomat (1819-1891)

Hi Duhlink!

Sorry I've not been in touch sooner! Trust that you are well. Gather June will be on her way soon.

Hi Goils!

Thanks for all the info and update on Mom. Glad that she seems to be recovering as things didn't look particulary good a week or so ago. Hope your interview went well with Co-op. As of this writing, have not been able to open pictures of Alejandro, Ayn.

Not quite sure how much time I'll have so hope I can send this before we board again. Just arrived a few minutes ago. Not a bad flight from Sydney. Only watched part of one movie, Tyrannosaur, a very, very heavy film. Set in Britain, present day or thereabouts, dealing with a lot of societal/familial hyper-dysfunction. Hope I can see it to its disturbing end as we landed before it was over. Initially, we were In Transit until we caught next leg of the flight to Narita. Had to wait for internal train to take us to our boarding gate. Service doesn't open until 6:00am so we are advantage of free WiFi here. HK is very organized so it makes traveling pretty easy. Not sure how we will fare once we land in Japan, however, given language barrier. Perhaps I'll just wave the single malt bottles in the general direction of our hotel and hope for the best from our taxi driver. Not really looking forward to the train ride from Narita into Tokyo with all our bags, either. Fortunately, we can send most of our luggage to Toshi's home while we are stumbling around the country before we stay with her and her mother. Toshi said it is very easy and relatively inexpensive to move luggage around country as it is quite common, apparently.

Time to run as boarding has started and Nana is roling here eyes. Much Love to you both, Los Horridos and Maggs!. Cheers, iDad, poorer but wiser!

Subject: Airportent, Sarchasm, NRBC lexicon, pelotonians, weather and Much
More!

Hi Whirlygig, or should I say, Mr Mafia!

Are you working for the Mob, now? have you ever read Michael Connelly's
Concrete Blonde? be careful, you may well end up as past of the foundation!

Loved the lexicon! Have added one of my own, Airportent: Things that happen
to you before you reach the terminal, things that occur during check-in and
things that are thrust upon you in Duty Free, which make you wonder if
travelling is a good thing.

1) Shuttle driver ripped the top handle off one of our designer suitcases,
(bought for $45 at Paddy's Market a week ago), lifting it out of the van, in
front of Departures.

2) Both of the new bags, (second bought today at same place but from a
different high-end stall, ($35), were about 7 kilos over 23 maximum. This
necessitated re-packing all four pieces of luggage. Fortunately our original
cases could "absorb" the overload. Must say that The Sisterhood was not
amused at having her silky under garments on display as I trudged back and
forth to scale at Oversize Baggage bay, making sure we conformed to weight
limits. Don't think that the 8 bottles of wine had anything to do with it so
can't really understand her piqué!

3) as we walked by a Swatch outlet in Duty Free Coriandre spied a watch
she'd been drooling over for some time so I was coerced into buying it for
her. Had to use my Visa and was charged 1.5% interest as I had just spent my
last cash on two bottles of single malt, (Laphroaig Quarter Cask and 10 year
old Ardbeg, Big Molly's drop, I understand.),
to give to some of Toshi's relatives who are hosting parties for us.

Time to run as boarding has started. Hello and fond regards to all. Cheers,
Il Conductore, poorer but wiser!

P,

Don’tyaknow the woid Mafia is passeo. As a senior associate at Italocementi
Shoes, I commend you. Unfortunately we cannot tell you when and where you
might have the opportunity to try them on. What I can tell you is that these
shoes will be the last ones you will ever need.

Airbagged: stuck in the car with someone who explodes every time you pull
out to pass.

Airpotent: the gas you get from your partner when you mention the causes of
excess baggage.

I am heading back out to help Mark with his garden project at WE Elementary
-- right next door to Big Al's. Don’t know what he is burying there but they
won't find out for a few centuries I expect.

Ray & I cannot seem to make the ride happen of late. Maybe we will hang up
our wheels and get into the malt cupboard before you get home.

Safe travels, W

Time for next leg. Hello to Marcus Aurelius. I knew he was connected to Ferragamo Italocementi and Deep Sea Enterprises: You stab 'me, We sink them! Sleep with da fishes and have a sleep like you've never had before. Our tailored slippers are comfy beyond belief. One size fits all even if we need to lop off a few toes to ensure a watertight fit!

Cheers, Il Conductore!

Hi Zircon!

Sorry I've not been in touch sooner! Trust that you are well.

O the perils of international travel: cheap suitcases that fall apart, having to be buy presents for the wife which take precedent over the duty free alcohol. I am so looking forward to an Air Transat trip to Gatwick and then on to Cork with Ryanair. I wonder how my bags will told up. Thank goodness I just bought Jan a watch for Christmas--so I may escape the perils of the Swatch boutique.
Sunday is Mother's Day in Canada. Just because you are out of the country you definitely aren't off the hook their either. The mother of your daughter must get roses.
Thanks for staying in touch. Stay well and stay upright. Zircon

Hi Raymond and Sylvia!

Trust that you are both well. I gather, from George, that you've been pretty busy with New Math for much riding, Ray. Probably too busy vacuuming as well!!! Too bad as weather looks like it is starting to improve. How is England, Sylvia?

Had hoped to send an update from Sydney, from airport, but events conspired against me!

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear Patrick,

Wow! You are still having new adventure every day and trust God always bless you and taking care of all your needs and beyond.

Japan in May must be a beautiful "post cheery-blossom" season and must be such a different country from Australia.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

As for Hong Kong the recently temp is already 33C and is an early summer starting already!

Blessings, Daniel

I've stayed there several times.

Can't believe that you'll be in Japan less than 8 hours!!
I'm too excited!!
At least 2 bags, fine!!

Have a nice fight from Hong Kong! Love, Toshiko

Pat,

Hope you arrive at your destination not completely exhausted.

You're right - haven't done any riding of late but intend to return to the bike next week, once Sylvia is back. With the extra household duties, trying to get my head around some statistics I haven't looked at since university days, gardening, and tutoring, life has been full. Not complaining but I would like to maintain the fitness achieved from the bike. Hope to link up with George on  Monday.

Sylvia has been having a very good time. Last week's Eurostar to Paris went very well. Jenny had arranged the rental of an apartment. The owner was still there when they arrived which proved fortuitous as he showed them where to go before heading off himself. Tomorrow they are travelling to the countryside outside of Norwich to visit friends and will stay overnight. I think Jenny's boyfriend is with them and doing the driving.

The Brownlees are in Croatia at the moment. Had dinner with Arthur Chapman last week. He and Jim played for the county team in their 20's and Arthur passed along a club brochure which contained some glowing commentary about Jim's abilities on the rugby field. Arthur made a very good meal and he was in good spirits, so we had a very good evening.

Planted some tomatoes for a lady whose son I taught previously. Returned home with enough food for Chris and I, with some left over. Hell of a deal! Also snaffled some apple crumble from other friends but didn't share. Off to Peter's tomorrow for dinner which will be a nice treat.

Last I heard from Jim Crowe, he was in Dortmund but back in HK now, I think.

3 more weeks and you'll be back. Better start riding again so I'm fit enough to keep up.

Should finish Ian Rankin's 'The Impossible Dead' tonight and I have The Power of One ready at Kerrisdale library which I will get tomorrow.
Regards to Corinne and best wishes for the rest of your travels.
Ray

 Swiss sushi by Nadienka!

Greetings from Akihabara!

Hi Sarge!

Trust everyone is well. Sorry that I have not been in touch sooner. We are just about to check-out from the Washington Hotel. Room is very comfortable but not much larger than our room in Port McQuarrie! Both of us have been very pleasantly surprised at how relatively easy it is to get around, not speaking any Japanese. I had hoped to send along a message before we left Sydney and then again during lay-over in Hong Kong but for all sorts of reasons, (see below), didn't manage to do so. Once we landed in Japan we didn't have Internet access. Just returned from a huge electronics store, almost across the street where I felt like a Millionaire. It opened at 9:00am and Cora Leee and I had a great breakfast at a small noodle house, lunch counter style, while waiting for store to open. We'd found out where to buy sim card the night before after we had unpacked and repacked, (Sent two large bags to Toshi's place this morning on way to breakfast. They will be there tomorrow but we won't see her and her Mom until this coming Friday. Really glad we don't have to lug them around!), and showered, changed, to go ut for a very good meal at Sushizanmai, again, in block opposite hotel. One of the sushi chefs spoke quite a bit of English so it was fun. Chap next to me at counter even complimented me on my dexterity with chopsticks but I think he was just being polite because even with shorter Japanese ones I'm not all that capable. Food was wonderfully delicious and we enjoyed all the shouting. Every so often a bell would ring and a new dish would be announced to applause from customers and then people would indicate that they'd like some of dish, from a huge crag omelette, (I had this and it was yummsters!), to something on giant clam shells. Glass of draft for me and half a bottle of French Chaaaaaaaaarrrddddddoooooooonnnnaaaaaay, for Cora Lee.), as when I asked a slaes rep where sim card counter was, I was taken by one of the many clerks roaming throughout the store to correct service desk, past row after row of other sales clerks, all bowing to me as I passed. Sorry, not a Millionaire but Royalty! If this keeps up, I'll have a permanent, forced smile welded onto my face by the time we leave the country!

Almost 11:00am so time to go. Cheers, Cora Lee and Patrizzio!

Greetings from Tokyo
