SDBT: Sunday, May 27th

How would you describe the difference between modern war and modern industry -- between, say, bombing and strip mining, or between chemical warfare and chemical manufacturing? The difference seems to be only that in war the victimization of humans is directly intentional and in industry it is "accepted" as a "trade-off". -Wendell Berry, farmer, author (b.1934)

From Nadienka:

Hi Dad,

Urrhhhgggggg So June and her friend Myrtle are very nice yes, but oh my god they are work, will explain all in person, but it looks like they may have dropped something in the toilet because the whole time Brian's parents have been next door the toilet will not work unless you plunge every time, but they never told me because they didn't want to bother me and when I asked June and Myrtle about it, it seems they could not find a toothbrush so I bet that's the problem. So its Sunday now so will call a plumber tomorrow. I haven't seen Grames in a couple days so will go today.

Hope you have a great last couple days, looking forward to your return so you can deal with stuff.

What time do you arrive on Thursday? xx chloe

Just discovered the most amazing Armenian grocery store in my new neighborhood...Olive's Fresh Produce...gorgeous shop with amazing meats and more

    • Patrick James Dunn Can hardly wait! Nana is sleeping as we zip towards Tokyo. She'll probably be snoring gently as we whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz past Mt. Fuji!

Ayn P I think you should wake her at Mt Fuji Poppa or she'll be very mad that she missed it!

    • Patrick James Dunn You obvously don't know your Mother that well. She's very, very crabby whenever I try to rouse her. Perhaps if I say "Waki, Waki" and clap my hands like you used to do when travelling to Falcon she might not be upset!!!

    • Ayn P I think that is a method you should certainly experiment with...the clapping of the hand must be sharp to command attention
Hi Cactus!

Trust you and Floridian are well. Thanks for tip on book. Had not heard of it or the author but will try to find a copy, particularly since I almost certainly figure into the plot! Was eight in 1956 and we left Cyprus the following year.

Hi Ski!

Trust you and Ronaldo are well Has really been on a whirlwind last few days, ever since leaving Hiroshima, on Thursday. Time in Kyoto and Maibara, (nearbye), with Toshi at the family home, (second home, "cabin"), of Naomi, the auditor of the company she works for, and his wife, Meiko, and then back to Kyoto again, Saturday. Shinkansen, Bullet Train, trips of only an hour or so, were simply remarkbale. The temples and shrines in both places, many that we saw are designated World Heritage sites, are stunning in their beauty and quite different, in terms of garden style, architecture, etc. We took the train into Osaka around 10:30am Sunday morning to have a lunch at Tomiko's, Toshi's mother's cousin's small but very comfortable yakatori restaurant. Tokio had very kindly offered to host a party for about 15 relatives. His daughter Ayako, is Toshi's second cousin and her husband, Takao, runs the restaurant with his father-in-law. Food was fabulous, and I do mean fabulous. All the aunts and her uncle, (they have all visited us in Vancouver, over the years), were there and we even celebrated Toshi's 40th ahead of time. It is actually on the 31st, day we fly back to Vancouver, so it was great to be able to sing For She's a Jolly Good Fellow...! In fact, you are welcome to stay with Toshi and her mom, or any of their relatives, for that matter. Not kidding or exaggerating, as everyone is genuinely happy to host visitors. Just let me know when to tell them to expect you!!!

Hi Chris and Jim!

You are too busy to fill the role of grandparenting! I trust all goes well on that front. For my part, I despair of being bale to keep up with Robo Ray when we return at the end of May. No exercise, except walking and opening bottles! Cora Lee, kimono clad, sends her fond regards to you both. It really is an incredible country and can honestly say we are sorry we hadn't made the effort to visit before this. Anyway, couldn't 't be happier that we are finally scratching the surface.

Hi Vienner Schnitzel Man!

Trust you and Wrong Reservation Lynne are both well in spite of mix-up! I thought that The Sisterhood never ever made mistakes!!!

Hi Sylvia!

Trust you and Ray are both well. Sorry I've not replied sooner. Glad your trip went well. In fact, we have weekend passes for the Folk Fest so you are more than welcome to join us. Robo Ray can ride his bike down and poke his nose through the fence and listen for nothing!

Hi Kathleen!

Trust you and the Free Agent are both well. Sorry I've not replied sooner. Thanks for inquiring about Mom. As of this writing, she seems to be more than holding her own, according to latest reports from Chloe.

Hi Patrick

Observed some of the Wetherby Triathlon as I headed in the opposite direction from the cycling leg today and was then joined for a few minutes on my solitary pelaton by two mature riders with matching yellow jerseys. After overtaking me on their road bikes and then allowing me to overtake them,  while they refreshed themselves, they caught me again and chatted - condescendingly but pleasantly saying "you're cycling well.........". I can fill in the blanks there.

Apparently they are part of a squad of a dozen or so who have set up their own pelaton. One of their group rides starts in York with breakfast at Betty's continues to Harrogate Harlow Carr Betty's for coffee and then onto Betty's at Ilkley for lunch. One of them has added afternoon tea at Betty's Northallerton- apparently 80 odd miles. This, I believe, puts into perspective  Chris' and my latte stops.

We drove into Northumberland on Friday night after visiting Laura and Ed's and it looked great in the excellent weather we have enjoyed over the last week. We drove to Kielder Water a man made lake where one can ride round, a distance  of 27 miles which I would like to do sometime. Then over the Scottish border and down to Hadrian's Wall back in Northumberland where we had intended to visit the settlement of Vindolanda but ran out of time visiting a new visitor centre and museum of Roman artefacts. Passed some of the sections of the Hadrian's Wall cycle and walking routes . Long drive back home including visiting my mother in hospital who seems to be improving somewhat.

Hope to hear your cycling is shaping up. Regards Jim

Hi Chris and Jim, or should it be, Betty and Betty!

A new "low" for the Latte Peleton, putting aside the 80 odd miles! Must say that 27 miles will be a hardship once we are back, May 31st. I plan to ask Ragin' Bull to go for one of his usual latte rides before even thinking about a Tour de Iona with Whilrlygig and Robo Man!

En route to Tokyo, soon to be abandoned by Toshi in Shin-Osaka. Time to get ready to board the train. Cora Lee gets nervous about not getting to right platform on time, standing in right place for our numbered car so we have to wait at entrance/exit to train for 20 minutes before train actually pulls intot the station! Gorgeous weather here and am glad you seem to enjouing the same in Yorkshire with Hadrian and company. All the best from Cora Lee, aka Nervous Nelly. Cheers to the Wetherby Triatheletes, and to you too, Jim!

One of last entries I've had time to work on, should you have trouble falling asleep or are tired of doing housework!

Hi, Corinne, Patrick!

How was you ride to Tokyo by Shinkansen?
Were you able to see Mt. Fuji??

You may be relaxing at your hotel before discovering the city of Tokyo.

Just brief information of Tokyo:
(go for half a day or a couple of hours)
- ASAKUSA
The area around Asakusa is called Shitamachi (old downtown)
known for the mood of the old days and the warmhearted residents.
http://www.asakusa-kankou.com/
- Kappabashi Dougu Street, like Minami in Osaka where Japanese knives are sold.
located also in ASAKUSA area and opened from 9:00 to 17:00.
 http://www.kappabashi.or.jp/en/index.html
- GINZA
famous shopping and fashion areas where many high class sores are located,
like Fifth Avenue in NY. At the same time, lots of reasonable fashion stores
have opened in recent years.
- AKIHABARA
the area where you stayed on the first day in Tokyo.
well known as an electronics quarter and for Japanese pop culture such as
anime, game shops and maid cafes
- KAMAKURA, ancient capital of Japan
known as historic town and famous for the Great Buddha of Kamakura.
there're many shops selling kimono and Japanese products, too.
about an hour from Tokyo by train.

It was really nice seeing you in Japan, especially in my city!
My mom, me and all of the family and friends had a great time with you!!
Thanks a million!!

I called my mom right after your train headed for Tokyo,
asking how she's doing.
I noticed she’s crying a lot while watching our cab's driving away.
She said she felt better, but again she choked by holding her tears back
while we talked on the phone.
Well, what I want to say is she enjoyed and miss you already that much!!
So I'm sure she'll get better quickly and visit you in Canada soon!!

Please enjoy your stay in Tokyo.

Your luggage will arrive at your hotel tomorrow by 13:00.
It costed 3,360yen. You gave me 4,000yen, so 640yen left.

If there are anything I can do, please e-mail me or call me anytime. Love, Toshiko

Hello VIWF

Would very much like to attend Sneak Preview. Corinne Durston may have already sent an RSVP but, just in case it never arrived, we both plan to attend. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio Dunn!
